Activities
GETAWAY
Getaway is our annual trip to a regional centre in Victoria. The program is organised by Robert, Sue, Vivienne and Campbell. It extends over five days, Sunday to the following Friday. We stay in a local caravan park and enjoy daily and half day trips either by bus or our own cars to sites and activities. These include two or three communal breakfasts and evening meals as barbecues or at local RSL clubs and hotels. Warrnambool is our 2024 destination.
TRIPS & TOURS
This program is convened by Jan, Betty and Jim. The trips or tours are interesting excursions in and around Melbourne with the occasional trip further afield either by bus or car. Usually we have guide to provide a greater appreciation of the venue. Recent destinations have been the Fire Services Museum, The Shrine of Remembrance and Darebin Parklands.
GARDEN GROUP
The Garden Group is convened by Nellie and is held at Box Hill South Bunnings on Middleborough Road. We are fortunate that two of our members, Peter and Joan are professional gardeners and they lead the discussion with topics appropriate to the season. Members are welcome to bring along problem plants for diagnosis and suggestions for treatment.
MORNING COFFEE
This very popular monthly gathering organised by Lesley takes place on the third Tuesday of the month at The Moon and Spoon, 3rd floor, Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre. A great event for new members in a convivial atmosphere to get to know the old hands and to gain a better understanding of the Club that was established in 1999. For some it is a coffee and an excellent vanilla slice, for others it is brunch with eggs Benedict.
BOOK GROUPS
We have three very active book groups led by Nellie, Kaye and Annette. Groups 1 and 3 meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month at The Groove Train at Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre. Group 2 meet on the 4th Thursday at Robinsons Book Store at The Glen Shopping Centre.
WALKING GROUP
The Walking Group is lead by Kevin and the activity is on the 2nd Monday of the month. The walk is usually on one of the many nature trails in the City of Monash and adjacent suburbs but with ventures further afield such as the Yarra Parklands. We pay an annual October visit to the Dandenong Ranges Botanical Gardens in Olinda. The November walk is 'Walkaway' when we venture further afield, such as the Yarra Ranges or the Mornington Peninsula for a two night stop-over.
DINE OUTS
Chris and Leo plan the Dine Outs lunches usually on a Friday late in the month. They select restaurants in the local area with a good reputation for their catering. They also book the occasional venture further away.
KNITTING & CROCHET
This activity is organized by Barbara on the first Thursday of the month. Full details are always in the Club's newsletter, The Bulletin. Knitwear is donated to local charities or made for the members own use.
THEATRE & CINEMA
Bianca is the organiser of the theatre and cinema trips. Theatre trips are usually to the new Whitehorse Council live performance venue - The Round, on Whitehorse Rd, Mitcham with copious carparking close to the theatre.
BOOK EXCHANGE
The Club has a book exchange at the monthly meeting. There is a broad range of fiction and non-fiction available on the honour system - members can take as many books as they wish and return them when the books have been read. Brian is happy to receive books donated by members to add to the collection.
FOOTY TIPPING
This hotly contested competition is held each year over the AFL home-and-away season, convened by Campbell. The entry fee is $10 and there are prizes for the three Top Tippers and the winner's name is inscribed on the Club's perpetual trophy. In the photo is Anne, the very proud co-winner (with Nellie) of the 2023 competition.
MONTHLY MEETING
Each Probus month begins with a general meeting commencing at 10am on the first Monday of the month. There is a short business meeting followed by morning tea (10.30 to 11.00). This is followed by an invited speaker who talks for some 45 minutes. The meeting finishes at 12 noon. Many members then go on to the Vice President's lunch at a nearby club or hotel.
